If you’re familiar with the B-52’s, then you probably know Kate Pierson, the band’s fiery redhead with a great voice. But did you know that Kate also owns a hotel? Eight years ago, she bought a rundown motor lodge in the Catskill Mountains and transformed it into a retro, kitschy, super fun retreat that’s now considered one of the top hotels in the world.
I’ve never had a chance to stay at Kate’s Lazy Meadow but I’ve certainly admired it from afar. I adore theme hotels in general, but the lodging choices there are especially awesome….from the gnome suite and tiki hideaway to the vintage Airstream trailers with names like Tinkerbell. In fact, if I was a famous rock star with money to burn, I too would open a quirky country getaway, and I might even do it here….
Located on 47 acres near Hermann, Missouri, “Fort Ming” is a private compound of historical buildings collected by John Ming, a log cabin specialist who has dismantled and reconstructed dozens of log structures all across the Midwest. Ming salvaged two graineries, a blacksmith shop, a smokehouse and a two-story schoolhouse to create this place, and he has been running it as a rustic B&B ever since, or what he calls a “steak & bed.”
Besides the log cabins, the property has an outdoor dining room, a big rec room, multiple firepits, two lakes, and its very own zip line. Oh, and LOADS of character. If it were mine, I would totally funk up the decor with some brighter colors and retro details. I would also welcome dogs and host some live music. But that’s just me. What about you?
If you’d like a buyer’s agent to show you this one-of-a-kind property, I’d be happy to help!
