Teacher’s Pet: 20 Clif Side

As a general rule, I never blog about a house if one of my clients is interested in it. But in the case of this super cool Glendale home that I showed last week, I’ve been given the green light to share.

Built in 1956, this sprawling raised ranch is nestled into a hillside just off Berry Road, and there’s no question that it resembles the long, low, organic style created by Frank Lloyd Wright. In fact, a former dean at Washington University’s School of Architecture challenged his graduate students to design a Wright-inspired house, and #20 Clif Side is what they came up with. A friend of the dean later purchased the plans and commissioned the home to be built.

Both inside and out, you’ll find some pretty classic Wright features: cantilevered roof lines, distinct public and private wings, contrasting ceiling heights, and of course, a strong connection with the surrounding land. Thanks to a wealth of precisely placed windows, Mother Nature is the star of the show in nearly every room. And yet the interior still feels incredibly private.

The other amazing thing about this house is that it’s largely in original condition. The bathrooms are all classic 50s (except one modern vanity), and most of the original birch & pine woodwork is still intact. There’s also an old intercom system still in place, though all of the 50s light fixtures have been updated. Bummer.

Still, there’s so much to love about this place, including the fact that it hasn’t been on the market in 37 years! The tuck-under garage is fantastic. So is the atrium-style foyer. And though the yard is definitely hilly and shady, there’s a great patio for entertaining and a lovely little courtyard that you can see from the kitchen.

Some buyers may be scared away by the corner lot and proximity to Berry Road, and that’s a shame. Because I can assure you: inside, you’d never know there’s a busy street nearby. If anything, this house is incredibly quiet and peaceful.

So what are you waiting for? If you appreciate mid-century modern architecture and the work of Frank Lloyd Wright, #20 Clif Side is a must-see!

It has 3 bedrooms and 2.5 baths in more than 2200 square feet. There’s also bonus space on the lower level.

If you’d like a buyer’s agent to show you this unique home, which is listed by Gail Gilmore of Coldwell Banker Gundaker for $350,000, give me a call!
