Eclectic Mansion looking for Love: 1347 Craig

Now is probably a good time to share the announcement I mentioned a few weeks ago…. I’m officially the newest member of St. Louis County’s Historic Buildings Commission!

I was recently appointed by the county council, joining eight other board members in the goal of preserving St. Louis County’s historic buildings. So I guess it’s only appropriate that I’m sending out this SOS: Somebody please save this fantastic house on Craig Road!


County records say it was built in 1930 but I suspect it may be older, likely Victorian era. Either way, this place is an absolute time capsule and it would be a crime to see it torn down.

It needs a LOT of work but the potential is incredible. The rooms are large, the ceilings are tall, the original woodwork is gorgeous, and there’s a 2-car garage with a full apartment above it! Mid-century fans will also appreciate the colorful tiled bathrooms, the vintage wallpaper, and the huge knotty pine rec room built on the back of the house.


This property is being sold as a foreclosure so it truly comes as-is. But if you’re open to rehabbing and you wouldn’t mind owning a 2868-square-foot house on .78 acre in a prime mid-county location, you should probably take a look…


The main staircase is flat out awesome. And yes, this bathroom is purple…

And the kitchen definitely needs a rehab but there’s plenty of space to work with…

On the downside, the house is literally land-locked. The previous owners sold off the adjoining lots so the only driveway access is via easement on the neighbors’ property. Also, there’s a busy road out front, which will be a big NO for many people.

But if you’re looking to revive a grand old house that still has gobs of original character, do not pass this place up. Homes in this size range in this zip code have sold for far more than the current list price.
