Who’s Ready for a House Tour?

Back in 2012, I wrote about an amazing historic gem in unincorporated St. Charles: the McClay Mansion. In 2013, I ended up representing the people who bought the property. And just a couple weeks ago, I spoke in support of them at the St. Charles County council meeting, where they were taking the final step in their plan to open the mansion as a wedding and event venue.

When we first saw the house, it was a complete mess. Many decades of neglect had left it in very poor condition, and my clients faced an expensive, uphill battle to not only restore it but also to convince the neighboring homeowners that their plan was a good idea.

Many thousands of dollars later, the property has indeed been restored. It’s absolutely gorgeous now! And though some of the neighbors still object, the county ultimately agreed to allow rezoning so this incredible frontier-era landmark can be open to the public.

How’s this for a before & after?

Now known as the Stone House of St. Charles, every inch of this historic home has been transformed. And now you can see it for yourself! Tomorrow, October 1, from noon-4pm is the Early Settlers Homes Tour, sponsored by the St. Charles County Historical Society (which I’m proud to support as a business member).

In addition to the McClay Mansion, your $20 donation also provides access to the Fort Zumwalt home, the Darius Heald home and the O’Fallon log cabin museum – all local landmarks in their own right. Tickets are available online but you must pick them up at the historical society on Main Street by today. For more info, call (636) 946-9828.

If you can’t make the tour but you’d still like to see the Stone House (or rent it for an event), call Mike & Ruth at (636) 541-2698. And tell them I sent you!
